LASU Bans Music, Foods, Guests on Sign Out Day

LASU Bans Music, Foods, Guests on Sign Out Day

The Lagos State University (LASU) Senate, at its 306th Statutory Meeting held on Thursday, 25th January 2024, considered a paper Ref: LASU/SEN/ST.306/063 on a report concerning the signing-out funfair by final-year students.

Senate, during consideration of the paper, noted that:

i. the Students’ Affairs Division had observed flagrant disregard for rules and regulations guiding students’ conduct in the University during supposed signing-out funfairs by the final-year students;

ii. the final-year students also invited their friends (who were not students) to the campus to felicitate with them;

iii. the students threw caution to the wind as they drank alcoholic beverages, smoked weed and cigarettes, used shisha, and dressed very indecently;

iv. disc jockeys and musical equipment were brought onto the school premises;

v. while the signing-out funfairs were ongoing, some students were still writing their examinations, and members of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Teams were on campus for the accreditation of some programmes;

vi. the crowd of students and their invitees, along with the indiscriminate parking of their vehicles, also led to traffic congestion on the campus;

vii. the Students’ Affairs Division, Security Unit, and some Deans had a hectic time controlling the crowd; and

viii. the students also made the University environment dirty and untidy.

Senate expressed concern and condemned in totality the unbecoming actions of graduating students in the name of signing-out funfair parties.

Senate, after extensive deliberation, decided as follows:

1. Henceforth, all final-year students are to sign an undertaking not to organise any funfair/party in the name of signing out.

2. For a signing-out event to be organised, students must:

a. not play any music at such an occasion;

b. not bring food, cake, or drinks from outside the premises for such an occasion;

c. not invite or bring any visitors to such an occasion; and

d. not bring any canopy or tent onto campus for such an occasion.

3. Any student or group of students found violating the above regulations shall be rusticated for one (1) academic session, and all examinations written by the student or group of students in their final year shall be cancelled. This means such student(s) will have to pay another tuition fee, re-register the courses, and re-write the final-year examinations.
