The Vice-Chancellor of Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), Ado Ekiti, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, on Tuesday, urged the university’s newly admitted students to avoid bad company and instead associate with individuals who inspire and uplift them.
Olarinde reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to redefining education in Nigeria and globally through “the provision of quality and functional education, fostering innovation, and instilling core values to empower students to become leaders of positive change.”
Speaking during the 2024/2025 matriculation ceremony held at ABUAD, where 2,955 new students were admitted—comprising 2,507 undergraduates, 34 Open and Distance Learning Programme students, and 414 part-time students—the Vice-Chancellor underscored the university’s dedication to excellence.
“At ABUAD, we are steadfast in our commitment to excellence across all spheres, focusing particularly on academics, morals, innovation, vocational training, and research,” she said.
Under the visionary leadership of the founder and Chancellor, Aare Afe Babalola, the VC noted that ABUAD has become a globally recognised institution that goes beyond imparting knowledge to shaping character and preparing students for future careers.

“ABUAD’s dedication to quality education, innovation, and core values has cemented its reputation as a leading university both nationally and globally. I encourage you to embrace these values as an integral part of your growth mindset, for they will help you grow stronger, achieve greater heights, and shine brighter in all you do,” Olarinde said.
She also warned students against associations that could jeopardise their academic and moral development. “Remember that evil communication corrupts good manners. Surround yourself with people who inspire and uplift you, not those who lead you towards distractions or vices that can derail your bright future.”
Olarinde emphasised the importance of discipline and adherence to the institution’s code of conduct, stating, “ABUAD enforces a code of conduct with firm consequences for breaches, so staying focused, disciplined, and principled is essential.”
