BREAKING: JAC CALLS OFF INDEFINITE STRIKE, CLASSES TO RESUME

Jac

Following a productive meeting held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, between the Rectors/Provost of tertiary institutions in Oyo State and the representatives of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Tertiary Institutions, mediated by Platinum Consultants, significant resolutions have been reached to address the demands of the JAC. The meeting, convened to deliberate on the indefinite strike action declared by JAC, focused on the full implementation of the new minimum wage and the long-overdue 25/35% salary increments for staff of tertiary institutions in the state.

After extensive discussions and negotiations, the following resolutions were unanimously agreed upon:

Immediate Implementation of New Minimum Wage and Salary Increase: The management of tertiary institutions in Oyo State has committed to the full implementation of the new minimum wage, including the 25/35% salary increase, effective from the March 2025 salary payment.

Arrears Payment Structure: The arrears for the minimum wage consequential adjustment for January and February 2025, as well as the 25/35% salary increase spanning from January to December 2024, will be structured for payment in instalments within the current year, 2025. This phased approach ensures that the financial burden on the institutions is managed while fulfilling their obligations to staff.

In light of these resolutions and the intervention of well meaning individuals across the state, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) has agreed to suspend the indefinite strike action with immediate effect. Normal academic and administrative activities are set to resume across all tertiary institutions in Oyo State to allow for the implementation of the agreement reached.

However, the JAC has emphasized that the suspension of the strike action is contingent upon the strict adherence to the terms of the agreement. Any breach or delay in the implementationthe JAC has emphasized that the suspension of the strike action is contingent upon the strict adherence to the terms of the agreement. Any breach or delay in the implementation of the resolutions will result in an immediate and indefinite resumption of the strike action.

The leadership of JAC wishes to express its profound appreciation to all parties who contributed to the resolution of this matter. Special thanks go to the Platinum Consultants, Rectors and Provosts of the tertiary institutions under JAC, the Commissioner of Education, the Commissioner of Finance, and all key stakeholders for their commitment and intervention during the negotiations.

JAC also extends its heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, for his worker-friendly approach and his goodwill in ensuring that this matter was resolved amicably. His intervention and dedication to the welfare of workers in the state have been instrumental in achieving this positive outcome.

While celebrating this milestone, JAC respectfully implores His Excellency to look into other critical issues affecting Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in the state, particularly in the areas of staffing and infrastructure development. Addressing these challenges will further enhance the quality of education and create a more conducive environment for both staff and students.

This development is a testament to the power of dialogue and collaboration in resolving industrial disputes. The JAC remains steadfast in its dedication to protecting the rights and welfare of its members while ensuring that the academic progress of students is not unduly disrupted.

The JAC hereby appreciates its member unions and individual members for their unwavering support, solidarity, and compliance with its directives. Their patience and understanding during this period have been crucial in ensuring the success of these negotiations. JAC promises to continue engaging with the Government, Governing Councils, and the institutions to advocate for the welfare of its members and to ensure a conducive working environment for all.
