Nigerian Defence Academy Gets First Professor

The Nigerian military university, the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, has announced the promotion of Lt. Col. Abubakar-Surajo Imam as a professor of mechatronics engineering.

This was contained in a statement released by the Registrar of the Nigerian Defense Academy, Brig.-Gen. A.M. Tukur, in Kaduna on Friday.

With this announcement, in the history of the Nigerian army, imam becomes the first serving personnel to become a professor.

The registrar of the academy explained that Lt. Col. Abubakar-Surajo became a professor after a ratification by the Nigerian Defence Academy Council Meeting in September with the professorship taking effect from October 1, 2023.

The registrar added that the decision of the NDA council meeting was in recognition of the confidence and contributions of the imam to the development of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

According to him, the new professor has set and upheld excellence in his field, complementing his exemplary services.

“This recognition not only honours Professor Imam but also highlights the commitment of the Nigerian Defence Academy to acknowledging and rewarding outstanding contributions within its academic community,” he added.

Tukur, on behalf of the commandant and staff of the academy, congratulated the newly promoted professor, urging him to continue to work hard in order to justify the confidence invested in him by the academy.

Lt. Col. Abubakar-Surajo Imam was born in Kankia, Katsina State, and has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Bayero University.

He joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of Course 32, the Short Service Combatant course, and later converted to regular commissioning. Imam was assigned to the Nigerian Army Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Imam has served in various units, among which include HQ Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Corps, Technical Group EME, 1 Base Workshop, and DICON.

He is a researcher at various institutions, including the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Kano State Kaduna,  and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The founding of the NDA Mechatronic Engineering Department and the establishment of the Center for Innovation and Creativity were spearheaded by him.

He has published books which cover mechatronics, IC Microcontrollers, Coding, Robotics and Drone technology for Kids, Embedded Systems Design, Field Manuals for Drone Technology Sensors and Actuators for Embedded Systems, among others.
